|
|
Hi Gang,
You all know that the pressure gradient to the Central Valley is critical to get the ocean winds to accelerate into the Bay.
What is less obvious is the direction those winds take after flowing through the many gaps in the Coast Range.
And that determines:
1. Which sites receive strong wind.
2. How close the wind comes to the actual launch sites rather than staying far from shore.
And that is determined by where in the maximum pressure gradient is located in the 450-mile-long Central Valley.
Today, the pressure gradient is evenly split between Sacramento, Stockton, and Bakersfield, bringing winds to most San Francisco Bay Area sites.
But the tricky-to-forecast clearing pattern can spoil this pretty picture at sites with clearing issues.
This blog shows how this pattern will play out today if we get enough clearing.

Perfect? I'm glad a lot of locations are having fun, but wind direction of 247 sucks ass for 3rd Av.

Hi a-might-bit-goosty,
The title "Perfect Wind" was a play on the title of the book and movie "The Perfect Storm" (a great read if you are interested in deadly winds)
Both titles referred to the strength of the wind produced by a pattern not how perfectly wonderful it was to be on the water.
Anytime the forecast mentions 2 different wind directions, you can expect unfavorable launch site winds at some sites. Most commonly, that means 3rd. Ave. and Pt. Isabel launch sites since they are focal points where 2 different winds can battle. See below.
