be sure to pull the weedwacker string to cause the hat brim to cup similar to mine. It is that "cupping" which gives it surprising stiffness and stability.
I too, am a melanoma survivor. Had it removed back in October. I've been pretty good about wearing long sleeve rash guards and "Tour de France" type biking tights which I buy off Ebay. It sure has reduced the damage to my skin, but I will need to do more. My wife has made some lycra head "socks" for some of the other local sailors, and that may be my next addition to ward off the sun damage. |
Sailwave Here: I forgot to tell you that the white Tilley hat you show has very poor SPF. I wore my white hat for 5 hrs in the sun working on a patio paving project. There was a perfect red strip across my forehead at end of day where there is just the single layer of material in front. My navy blue hat has excellent SPF in the same conditions and likley due to just being a dark color. The navy blue fabric actually seems heavier too.
Here is the T3 navy blue hat I like:

I just saw this camo one for the first time and may get it:

I did exactly as you suggested and it worked great!
Sailed for 10 days in Bonaire, lots of plaining, yet lost this new hat only twice - both times after a good catapult. The hat floats well, which is important in less clear water.
Not sure now if I should wash it - it became very stiff because of the sea water |

Check out the Shelta hat at
https://www.sheltahats.com/collections/sun-hats .
It blows away Tilleys and every other hat I've seen for sun protection, comfort, security, wind resistance, visibility, ventilation, and every other objective I can think of for water sports use. |

+1 on the Shelta hats if you're not wearing a helmet with visor. I love the Osprey model (my old Tilley hat flew away doing foredeck in 12 kt breeze from behind me) |
